White Coffee
What is white coffee? Although it has been around now for a number of years, there are still many coffee drinkers out there who have no idea what that term means. Today, in this article, we will share what we know about white coffee.
And we know quite a bit. We are Madres Espresso, serving the Greater Olympia Metro area with our flagship coffee stand on the West side, on Cooper Point Road, and our coffee shop on the East side, on Pacific Avenue. Stop by and find out what great espresso/coffee tastes like and get to know our team.
What is white coffee?
What is White Coffee? White Coffee is coffee roasted half of the way through and at a lower temperature. By roasting it at a much lower temperature, you get a whitish colored bean that is higher in caffeine. This results in a very nutty and sweet taste, much different from traditional coffee.
Stated differently, the longer you roast coffee beans, and at a higher temperature, the darker the roast will be. When you go to the grocery store to purchase coffee beans, you will see the terms “light roast” or “dark roast,” and that is referring to the temperature and the duration of the roast.
Does white coffee have more caffeine?
Most definitely yes, white coffee has more caffeine than dark coffee, simply because the longer you roast coffee beans, at a higher temperature, the more caffeine you roast out of those beans. White coffee means lower temps and less roasting and thus, as stated earlier, more caffeine lost during the roasting process.
What does white coffee taste like?
In a word, white coffee tastes “milder.” It has less of a bitter taste normally associated with black coffee. It has a nutty taste as well. It is favored by many, many people who once said they did not drink coffee because of its bitterness.
History of white coffee.
Do not mistake “white coffee” with a drink called “flat white.” Flat white refers to mixing a milk product in with the coffee. White coffee refers to the roasting method, and as such its origins date back to the Middle East, probably during the early 19th Century.
Interestingly, when you go to a coffee shop or coffee stand, there may be great variation in the way white coffee is prepared, and it may take you several trips to several different coffee stands before you find one where the barista prepares white coffee to your specific taste preferences. That’s okay; keep looking; it’s worth it when you find a barista who truly understands what you are looking for in your white coffee.
